The NRL is contemplating the addition of a wildcard weekend, similar to the AFL's, to boost fan engagement and discourage teams from resting key players in the final round of the regular season.
Initially proposed by Rugby League Central in 2019, the wildcard weekend was set aside due to concerns that it might encourage mediocrity. However, with upcoming expansions - including Perth joining next year, Papua New Guinea a season later, and a potential 20th team by 2029 - discussions about the idea have resumed among league officials.
During a recent meeting with club representatives, NRL executive chair Peter V'landys confirmed that the concept was under consideration once more. The proposal will be evaluated with broadcasters to understand their interest, after which the NRL will share the outcome with the clubs.
The chances of the wildcard weekend being implemented seem promising, as it could lead to fewer inconsequential matches, reduce the incentive for top teams to rest players, and allow more teams to compete for final playoff spots.
