The NRL's match review committee made unexpected decisions regarding player charges following the intensive action of Round 4 on Saturday.

Despite ten players being placed on report during three games, only four players received charges.

Among those charged, Penrith Panthers' hooker Mitch Kenny faces suspension due to a hip drop tackle that resulted in his sin binning and left Parramatta Eels fullback Isaiah Iongi with a knee injury.

Kenny, who has been given a Grade 2 dangerous contact charge for a first offence, can accept a one-match suspension with an early guilty plea or contest it at the NRL judiciary, risking a tougher penalty.

Post-match, Coach Ivan Cleary urged officials to reconsider the rules surrounding hip drop tackles, indicating that Kenny might seek a downgrade at the judiciary based on these remarks.

Additionally, Viliame Kikau received a charge for a hip drop tackle that left Newcastle Knights' Tyson Frizell in pain, while Lachlan Galvin was charged for a similar tackle on Mat Croker.

Galvin's tackle appeared to make direct contact with the back of Croker's legs, with some arguing that it was more severe than the one that led to St George Illawarra Dragons forward Ryan Couchman receiving a four-week ban after Round 3.

Regardless, both Kikau and Galvin have received Grade 1 dangerous contact charges. Kikau faces a $1000 fine for an early guilty plea or $1500 if he contests and loses, while Galvin could incur $1800 or $2500 depending on his choices.

Manaia Waitere was also charged for a careless high tackle on Scott Drinkwater, receiving a Grade 1 charge and a $1000 fine as it's his first offence.

In other news, Canterbury Bulldogs forward Max King was not penalized despite a concerning crusher tackle on Dominic Young, and Mat Croker similarly escaped repercussions for a tackle on Canterbury's Marcelo Montoya.
