Jake Arthur is expected to take on a major playmaking role at Huddersfield in 2027, weakening Adam Clune's prospects of staying.
Clune is contracted to the Giants until the end of 2026, and Love Rugby League reports he will not receive a new deal.
The Newcastle Knights are emerging as favourites to sign the 31-year-old and bring him back to the Hunter.
Clune debuted in the NRL with St George Illawarra in 2020, making 25 appearances across two seasons before joining Newcastle.
He played 22 games for the Knights over two years, then moved to Huddersfield on a multi-year deal in 2024.
After featuring 24 times in his first Super League season, injuries restricted him to six games in 2025 and 11 in 2026.
His composed kicking and running game could provide halves cover for Dylan Brown, Fletcher Sharpe and Sandon Smith.
Sharpe and Smith helped Newcastle reach the 2026 NRL Grand Final after strong seasons.
The Knights are also set to add Marata Niukore in 2027, while Dane Gagai, Tyson Frizell, Tyson Gamble and Wilson De Courcey are leaving.
Bradman Best's longer-term future at Newcastle remains uncertain.
