Newcastle battle to keep Bradman Best

Bradman Best reveals why he’s likely to test his value on the open market

Parramatta have identified Newcastle centre Bradman Best as a recruitment target, as they seek to strengthen across the field in the coming free-agency period.

Best is reportedly leaning towards leaving the Knights when his contract ends in 2027, despite renewed discussions with Newcastle.

He can formally negotiate with other clubs from November 1. The Origin and Kangaroos representative has reportedly received a four-year offer worth almost $1 million a season, but has not signed.

Best said last week that talks, which had stalled, restarted after former Newcastle recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan left for Brisbane.

Newcastle want to retain him but face salary-cap pressure, with Dylan Brown and Kalyn Ponga each earning more than $1 million annually.

Parramatta, coached by Jason Ryles, see Best as a potential part of their revival after recent difficult seasons.

If Best leaves, Newcastle may turn to Dolphins outside back Jack Bostock, who is reportedly likely to join St George Illawarra in 2028. Parramatta have also been linked with Bostock.
