New Zealand's penalty-goal calls under scrutiny

Trent Robinson said New Zealand should have pressed their advantage instead of settling for penalty goals in Thursday's Rugby League World Cup opener.

The Kiwis lost 24-22 to Australia in Sydney, despite controlling much of the match.

Stacey Jones' side had 52 per cent of possession and better completion, and made more metres, line breaks, offloads and tackle breaks.

Two intercept passes also gifted Australia tries.

At 6-4 ahead in the 25th minute, New Zealand opted for a penalty goal after Reece Walsh conceded a penalty in front of the posts.

Channel 7 commentator and premiership-winning Roosters coach Robinson said: "I know it's points but they have been all over Australia," Robinson said.

He added: "Their shape and the questions they've asked have been outstanding."

Fellow commentator Luke Keary also favoured a tap: "I would be tapping and going," he said.

The Kiwis repeated the decision in the 38th minute, when Kotoni Staggs was sin-binned for a professional foul and Australia led 10-8.

The penalty goal tied the scores, giving Australia time to reach half-time before defending with 12 players.

New Zealand scored in the 48th minute while Staggs remained off the field, but may have missed a chance to add another try.

Fans criticised the choices online, with one writing: "All over the Aussies and you take the 2. That's just dumb football."
