New Zealand Warriors face NRLW rebuild

One New Zealand Warriors set for SG Ball season finale

Warriors chief executive Cameron George said the NRLW was at "the crossroads as a competition," as the club rebuilds after missing finals in its second season back.

The club confirmed that Harata Butler, Jay Huriwai, Patricia Maliepo, Capri Paekau, Laishon Albert-Jones, Lavinia Tauhalaliku, Anastasia Sekene, Felia Kia, Natalia Hickling and Metanoia Fetalaiga will depart.

Captain Apii Nicholls, Payton Takimoana, Emmanita Paki, Matekino Gray and Shakira Baker are not contracted beyond 2026. That leaves 10 players for 2027, excluding development players.

George said coach Ron Griffiths had established the qualities and leadership he wants after his second season in charge.

George described building a competitive squad as difficult. He said the club would not see players again until May next year.

He also pointed to Australia's three State of Origin matches before the NRLW season and the absence of an equivalent pathway in New Zealand.

The Warriors have partnered with South Sydney's domestic competitions and are flying players to Australia. George said, "Have we got it right yet? No, but are we committed to it? Absolutely."

George said strengthening local elite pathways would take years, and that current options do not match those in Queensland and New South Wales.
