'I really thought that was it': From garbo to Blues coach - and the lifeline that saved his career

While some recent coaches of NSW like Laurie Daley, Michael Maguire, and Brad Fittler are well-known, Matt King has been quietly carving out his niche behind the scenes.

King, now suddenly in the limelight, has built an impressive resumé over the years.

On Tuesday morning, the Blues assistant was officially named NSW's head coach, securing a two-year contract to defend the shield.

This advancement is the culmination of over ten years of hard work for King, who began his coaching journey with South Sydney during their 2014 premiership-winning season, later achieving two titles with the Roosters.

King's playing career was also marked by success, as he made memorable contributions as a wild-haired winger, participating in two grand finals for the Storm and clinching back-to-back Challenge Cup titles with Warrington.

Additionally, he enjoyed a noteworthy representative career, with ten appearances for Australia and nine games for the Blues.
