Jeremiah Nanai, a prominent player for the North Queensland Cowboys, will enter the negotiation market on November 1 for a potential 2028 contract.
With the window to discuss with rival clubs opening soon, coach Todd Payten has made it clear that an extension is not forthcoming prior to that date.
Since his debut as a teenager, Nanai has become a key player, securing a significant extension worth $3.6 million per year back in 2023, which concludes at the end of 2024.
"I'd love it to happen before November 1, but I just understand how the game works and how his manager works, so I don't think it will happen - or actually I know it won't happen," stated Payten in an interview.
Throughout 2026, Nanai's performance has been hindered by ongoing shoulder issues, limiting him to only nine matches this season.
As the season concludes, he will be absent for the final home game due to a knee injury, with John Bateman filling his position.
Payten reported that Nanai has "tweaked his medial" and will require a week of rest but is expected to recover in time for the following match.
"So it's a big off-season for him; he needs to get his shoulder right and (put his) head down, bum up and that thing will work out itself," he added, emphasizing the importance of Nanai's fitness for the team.
Robert Derby is set to replace Zac Laybutt on the wing as they prepare for Round 27, marking Derby's second appearance of the season.
