The Melbourne Storm has faced a significant setback in their quest for the NRL finals, as star five-eighth Cameron Munster is scheduled for knee surgery, a procedure that could sideline him for the remainder of the regular season.
Despite the challenges, the Storm still have a chance to qualify for finals, with six rounds left in the season, plus a scheduled bye.
They recently secured a narrow 22-18 victory against the Gold Coast, marking the club's 500th NRL win since their entry into the competition in 1998. However, a previous streak of seven consecutive losses has placed them in 10th position, trailing by four points from a top-eight finish.
"Melbourne Storm can confirm Cameron Munster will undergo surgery on his knee after sustaining a cartilage injury," a club statement released on Tuesday morning reported.
"Munster will begin his rehabilitation with Storm medical staff and is expected to be sidelined for at least 4-6 weeks."
The 31-year-old playmaker was given a rest by Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy for the recent game against the Titans, having participated in all 15 available matches this season, along with three State of Origin games for Queensland.
Tyran Wishart stepped in for Munster during Sunday's clash at AAMI Park and is poised to start in the upcoming match against the third-placed Sydney Roosters, who currently sit at 28 points.
