Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has faced criticism for his selection decisions for the Australian squad, particularly regarding the exclusion of centre Latrell Mitchell.
Despite keeping other incumbents in the squad, Meninga stated that he did not pick Mitchell because he believed he was injured.
Meninga's decision to retain under-fire fullback James Tedesco as captain has also been questioned.
The coach opted not to include a reserve fullback in the squad, which has caused frustration among fans and pundits, with many calling for the inclusion of young talent Reece Walsh and premiership-winner Dylan Edwards.
Despite the backlash, Meninga has shown loyalty to the majority of the team that emerged victorious in the Rugby League World Cup last year.
Mitchell, who played a crucial role in Australia's success at the World Cup, was not selected for the squad.
However, he has been active in the community since the end of the season and even participated in the Koori Knockout tournament.
During the tournament, Mitchell was seen alongside Bulldogs winger Josh Addo-Carr.
When questioned about Mitchell's absence from the squad, Meninga revealed that the Rabbitohs had informed him that Mitchell was injured.
"South Sydney Rabbitohs said he was out because of injury.
We have just gone with that," Meninga explained.
It remains to be seen how Mitchell's exclusion will impact the team's performance moving forward.
