Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga has responded to rumors linking several players to the new NRL franchise, including Panthers fan favorite Scott Sorensen, who has been suggested for a lucrative move. Meninga clarified that the Bears are not allowed to speak with any players until November 1, thereby dismissing recent speculation.

Reports indicate that Meninga is targeting superstars like Cameron Munster and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui for Perth's inaugural roster. Notably, there's talk of a substantial $7.5 million contract offer for Gold Coast captain Fa'asuamaleaui, who can enter the open market due to an option in his current long-term deal that activates on November 1.

Another player mentioned in connection with the Bears is four-time premiership-winning Penrith forward Sorensen. Veteran league journalist Phil Rothfield recently disclosed that Sorensen is on Meninga's radar, given that he is out of contract at the end of 2026 and will be eligible to negotiate with other clubs later this year.

Adding Sorensen would bolster the Bears' forward pack, reminiscent of how Felise Kaufusi and the Bromwich brothers strengthened the Dolphins when they joined the league. With Sorensen's contract expiring in 2026, he could be available to join the Bears for their first season in 2027 starting from November 1.

However, Meninga emphasized that any discussions regarding Sorensen or other players are premature, as he is 'not allowed to talk to them' at this time. While he understands the propensity for off-contract players to be linked with the well-funded franchise, he insists that any current associations are just speculation.

"Any player off contract at the end of 2026 is going to be put in the papers linked with the Perth Bears being interested," Meninga stated on SEN 1170. "All these people are being listed that we're interested in, they're all off contract next year. It's not that hard to put a list together."

"All these players are contracted and they're probably talking about staying on at their club a bit longer. We can't fit them in now. How am I going to say no to them all?"
