Matthew Johns has proposed a surprising candidate to replace Adam O'Brien as the new head coach of the Newcastle Knights, as the club searches for a successor ahead of the 2026 NRL season.

Recently, multiple names have emerged in connection with the Knights' head coaching position, including Dean Young, Blake Green, Willie Peters, and Justin Holbrook. However, Johns, who has a history with the Knights from his 176 NRL games, introduced another potential contender.

During a segment on SEN 1170's The Run Home, Johns mentioned that John Strange could be a strong coaching option, citing his successful tenure leading the Sydney Roosters NRLW and the Women's NSW Blues.
