Liam Martin, a prominent player for the Penrith Panthers and New South Wales, has chosen to withdraw from consideration for the Kangaroos' upcoming Ashes series in England to support his fiancée Chelsea, who is expected to give birth in October.
The Australian team will compete in three Test matches against England, but Martin has prioritized family over rugby, saying, "I'm pretty excited - but it means I'll probably have to pull out of the Ashes.
Given it's the first baby, I don't want to miss it."
He emphasized that if the series were held in Australia, he would not hesitate to play.
However, with the matches taking place overseas, he expressed concerns, humorously noting, "Chelsea could divorce me before we're even married." Despite missing last year's Pacific Championships due to a shoulder injury, Martin has consistently been a key player for the Kangaroos when fit.
He mentioned that he hadn't communicated his decision to the Kangaroos officials yet, as the team currently lacks a coach.
"I love pulling on that green and gold jersey, but family comes first, so I made the decision early on," he stated.
Martin reflected on the profound impact of fatherhood, saying, "You hear the boys with kids speak about life having extra meaning after [having kids], and who you play the game for.
It's been in the back of my mind this year how I'll need to try and leave a legacy for the family that they can be proud of."
His choice comes against a backdrop of uncertainty surrounding the Ashes series.
Mal Meninga stepped down as Kangaroos coach to take a role with the Perth Bears, while Brad Fittler has withdrawn his name from consideration, despite initially being considered the frontrunner.
Fittler criticized the Australian Rugby League officials for their lack of preparation regarding accommodations and logistics for the tour, which is only three months away.
Currently, Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters seem to be the leading candidates for the coaching position.
However, there are rumors that Wayne Bennett could also be in contention if the NRL decides to bypass its own regulations.
