Manase Fainu is expected to attend Tonga's World Cup match against Samoa at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.

The former NRL player made a surprise visit to Tonga training earlier this week while on day release.

On Friday, Fainu was released on parole from Parklea Correctional Centre in Sydney's northwest after serving more than four years in prison.

His brothers and other family members and friends gathered outside the prison to greet him. He left in a black car.

Fainu, a former Manly Sea Eagles hooker, looked markedly different from his playing days and had a long mullet.

He was jailed in 2022 after a District Court jury found him guilty of wounding a man with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The stabbing happened during a brawl outside a Mormon church dance.
