The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles suffered a disappointing 46-24 loss to the Newcastle Knights in the NSW Cup at 4 Pines Park on Sunday.
Coming off a victory against the Canberra Raiders, Manly aimed to build on their momentum under new coach Brett Kimmorley.
The Knights struck first in the sixth minute, exploiting a gap in the defense, allowing winger Logan Aoake to score and take a 6-0 lead.
Despite focusing on talented half Joey Walsh, Manly's captain Zach Dockar-Clay took advantage of a lapse in defense, setting up Jackson Shereb for a quick equalizer, making it 6-all after 15 minutes.
Dockar-Clay nearly created another try with a crossfield kick, but winger Blake Wilson couldn't secure the catch.
Manly eventually gained the lead when Walsh broke through the defense from 10 meters out, scoring to make it 12-6.
Shortly after, Walsh's quick thinking led to Clayton Faulalo assisting D'Jazirhae Pua'avase for another try, increasing the lead to 18-6.
Controversially, the Knights were awarded a try as time expired, closing the half at 18-12 in favor of Manly.
