Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has thrown his support behind Dylan Edwards, stating that the Penrith fullback deserves a spot in the New South Wales State of Origin team, even with James Tedesco as competition.
Both players are considered among the best fullbacks in the NRL, with Tedesco holding the position for both the Blues and the Kangaroos for several years.
However, Meninga believes that both men can be accommodated in the same starting lineup, pointing to Edwards' impressive performances on the wing for the Kangaroos during the Pacific Championships series.
Edwards, a three-time premiership winner with the Panthers, has been selected to play on the wing for Australia in the upcoming final against New Zealand.
Although initially overlooked for the Pacific Championships squad, Edwards earned a call-up due to a suspension handed to Josh Addo-Carr.
Many fans have argued that Edwards should have been picked ahead of Tedesco, especially considering the latter's underwhelming season with the Roosters.
Meninga had nothing but praise for Tedesco, describing him as a fierce competitor who was disappointed with his team's lack of success this year.
"He's a competitor.
That's what you like about him," Meninga said.
"I understand that statement.
Players want to be successful and play in winning teams, that didn't happen for him this year, so he probably feels a little bit unfulfilled."
Meninga's endorsement of Edwards for State of Origin selection is likely to spark further debate among rugby league fans.
While Tedesco has been a consistent performer for both club and country, Edwards' impressive displays for the Kangaroos may sway the opinion of the next Blues coach.
It remains to be seen whether Edwards will get the opportunity to prove himself on the Origin stage, but with Meninga's support, he certainly has a strong case.
