North Queensland Cowboys second-rower Luciano Leilua's future has taken an unexpected twist, as reports suggest he has now signed with the St George Illawarra Dragons.
According to zerotackle.com, Leilua had expressed his desire to be released from his contract, citing limited playing time in 2024.
With the Cowboys boasting talented players like Heilum Luki, Jeremiah Nanai, and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, Leilua felt his chances would be further diminished.
Interestingly, the Dragons had also held discussions with Luki and Finefeuiaki, who are both set to become free agents after 2024.
Despite the Cowboys insisting they could accommodate all four second-rowers, they granted Leilua permission to explore other options.
Initially seeking a deal worth $700,000 per year over three or four years, Leilua's valuation escalated to $900,000 per year.
While the Canberra Raiders had previously shown interest, it remains uncertain whether they or any other club will pursue Leilua at this inflated price.
