Lebanon's Cheika leaves league door open

Departing World Cup coach hints at rugby league return

Abbas Miski's golden-point try against France gave Lebanon its first win of the 2026 World Cup and made him the Cedars' all-time leading try scorer.

The dramatic finish was Michael Cheika's final match as Lebanon coach, but he has not ruled out returning to rugby league.

Cheika has led the Cedars since 2021 and will return to rugby union as NSW Waratahs coach in 2027, after Lebanon's campaign ends.

"I'll be back at some stage," Cheika said.

He worked with the Roosters under Trent Robinson this year, following earlier spells with the club and the Lebanese team.

Cheika credited the Lebanon campaign with preparing him for his return to head coaching.

"It's helped me get my head-coach legs back," he added.

Lebanon captain Alex Twal said the victory left him proud to represent his country.

"I've got goosebumps, I'm so proud to be Lebanese."
