Knights Update: Ponga Starts Modified Training

LeagueNews.co | Jess Malloy

The Newcastle Knights have announced that Kalyn Ponga has started a modified training program as he rehabilitates from a foot injury.

Ponga sustained a Lisfranc injury in the latter part of the 2025 season, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season and into the off-season.

It is reported that he is on track for a return by Round 1, as this type of injury typically requires about four months for recovery.

In a proactive statement, the club addressed anticipated media reports regarding Ponga's recovery, noting that recent footage showing him in a protective boot was simply for pain management as he participates in his return-to-play training program.

The club indicated that Ponga would resume full training in the new year, ensuring his availability for the season opener in Las Vegas against the North Queensland Cowboys at the end of February.

"Newcastle Knights captain Kalyn Ponga has returned to pre-season in a modified training program, as he progresses steadily through his rehabilitation from a Lisfranc injury," the club stated.

"The Club has continued to take a measured approach, given the nature of the injury."
