The Newcastle Knights' pre-season adjustments are becoming more defined, as recent training insights and club information indicate a fresh spine combination is being tested frequently.

Sources close to the team state that the notion of utilizing Smith in the halves was presented upon his arrival, suggesting he might play either in the halves or at hooker based on the Knights' strategic direction.

In training sessions, the Knights have been focusing their attack with Dylan Brown positioned on the left, while Phoenix Crossland has taken his role at dummy-half. This highlights the club's commitment to exploring new spine dynamics as they prepare for the 2026 season.

"They've been training [with this combination] a lot recently," sources revealed.

Additionally, there has been movement within the backline, with Fletcher Sharpe expected to start the season on the left wing. However, he is also anticipated to step in as five-eighth if needed and has been training at fullback on occasion.

This adjustment is reportedly due to Kalyn Ponga not yet receiving medical clearance for full-contact training, prompting the Knights to proactively plan for contingencies early in the pre-season.
