Kiwis leaders shape World Cup prep

Kiwis select four Panthers for World Cup

Kiwis players are taking charge of post-training video reviews in their unit groups, easing the load on coaches, assistant coach Slade Griffin said.

New Zealand open their Rugby League World Cup campaign against the Kangaroos on Thursday, with experienced players helping shape the team's preparation.

Warriors captain James Fisher-Harris, Knights captain Kalyn Ponga and Raiders captain Joseph Tapine lead the Stacey Jones-coached side alongside Kiwis stalwarts Moses Leota, Jahrome Hughes and Kodi Nikorima.

Griffin called the number of leaders "it's a good thing" and said the team's preparations had become player-led.

He said senior players had been given distinct areas of responsibility to guide teammates without repeating messages or clashing.

Griffin said the players' experience also lets them pass on knowledge through discussions of situations and scenarios that could help the team.
