Kiwis' Hughes shares Ponga comeback lesson

Jahrome Hughes, who recovered from a fractured left forearm in 22 days, says confidence is vital for Kalyn Ponga's return.

Hughes feared his 2025 season was over after breaking his arm in round 27, but returned for Melbourne Storm in the preliminary final.

"He's got to have confidence in his arm and feel right. You don't want him going out there and having to worry about his arm the whole game because that will take away from his game." Hughes explained.

Ponga broke his arm and had surgery after New Zealand's World Cup opener against Australia on October 16.

Named in reserves for Saturday's semi-final against Tonga, he could reclaim the No. 1 jersey if training goes to plan, with Stacey Jones able to make the switch.

Hughes said Ponga trained well this week as physios and medical staff supported his rehabilitation, including work on his arm and stiff wrist.
