Michael Maguire, the former New Zealand coach, has stepped down from his role, potentially opening the door for him to take over as the NSW boss in 2024.

The Blues have confirmed their interest in Maguire, but have not made any official announcements despite his departure from the Kiwi team.

Speculation has been ongoing for weeks that Maguire was the favorite to take over as the Blues coach next year, but his contract with the Kiwis until the 2026 World Cup complicated matters.

There were concerns over potential conflicts of interest, as Maguire would potentially be developing players at State of Origin level who could one day play a role in beating New Zealand on the biggest stage.

With Maguire's departure from the Kiwis, the Blues may confirm his appointment as early as next week.

Maguire's successful coaching record, including a stunning 30-0 upset over the Kangaroos in the Pacific Championships final earlier this month, has only enhanced his chances of coaching the Blues.
