The Melbourne Storm recently marked a historic milestone by debuting their first female team, the U17 development squad, who played against North Sydney Bears at AAMI Park.
This event represents a significant step for rugby league in Victoria, fulfilling the dreams of many junior players.
The squad achieved a victory, winning 12-6 in front of an enthusiastic crowd that had earlier witnessed the Storm's impressive win over the Wests Tigers.
This achievement is the result of an 18-month initiative supported by Women of Storm partners, including co-presenting partners Ellis Air and BMD, as well as supporting partners like Kangan Institute, Suzuki, The Amazing Baby Company, Gallaghers, and Cointree.
Initially starting with 80 eager young players, the program has established a pathway that will enable the Club to participate in the NSW Rugby League U17 Lisa Fiaola and U19 Tarsha Gale competitions by 2026.
There are also ambitions to field an NRLW team in the future.
Overall, this event marks not just a victory for the team but a new era in women's rugby league in Victoria.
"Running on to AAMI Park in front of the purple army is the dream for every junior rugby league player in Victoria, if not Australia."
