Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa has undergone surgery following "seizure activity" after multiple head collisions during Tonga's recent match against New Zealand on Sunday.
Katoa participated in the Pacific Championship Test, even after sustaining a significant blow from teammate Lehi Hopoate during warm-ups. He received another high hit in the first half but managed to pass a head injury assessment (HIA), only to face yet another head impact in the second half.
Disturbingly, Katoa was seen on the sidelines receiving oxygen from medical personnel while being transported on a stretcher.
The Melbourne Storm organization communicated with Tonga's Chief Medical Officer following concerns over Katoa's eligibility to play after the earlier collision. The club stated, "Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa was taken to hospital after suffering seizure activity on the bench during the second half of yesterday's Pacific Championships match between Tonga and New Zealand."
Katoa underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition, with support from his partner and mother. Storm's medical team continues to liaise with the hospital and Tonga's medical staff. The club plans to release further updates as new information becomes available.
