Kangaroos face second-row selection dilemma

Kangaroos World Cup selection state of play: Second-row

Angus Crichton's switch to rugby union makes him unlikely to feature for Australia at the Rugby League World Cup, leaving selectors with a second-row vacancy.

His Roosters contract, and consequently his NRL and ARLC arrangements, expires on November 1, about halfway through the tournament.

The NRL could consider a two-week bridging contract to maintain his insurance, as it could for Mark Nawaqanitawase, but selectors and officials are expected to look elsewhere.

Hudson Young would have been close to a certainty, but an Achilles injury leaves him racing to be ready for the opening round of 2027.

Jeremiah Nanai is likely to represent Samoa again after playing two Tests for Australia in 2022.

Kevin Walters therefore faces significant decisions, although several strong options and emerging players could fill the gaps.

Preston travelled to England for last year's Ashes but did not make his Australia debut; he is now strongly tipped for selection and World Cup game time.

The Bulldogs' failure to reach the finals may count against him, but his season-long form and upgraded contract extension strengthen his case.

Another possibility is a prominent Queensland player with eight State of Origin appearances but no Australia representation.
