Johnston's contract: A try on the horizon

South Sydney Rabbitohs veteran winger Alex Johnston is on the verge of becoming the game's all-time leading try-scorer.

Although the record might not fall this season, Johnston's future appears secure at the Maroubra-based club.

According to zerotackle.com, Johnston, who is off-contract at the end of 2025, has been able to explore opportunities with rival teams since November 1.

He recently indicated to News Corp that a contract extension with South Sydney is imminent.

Currently, one of the greatest wingers in the sport, Johnston is just a few tries shy of breaking Ken Irvine's longstanding record.

Although he started 2025 recovering from an Achilles injury, which was followed by a shoulder problem in his debut match, he has impressively scored 11 tries in 9 appearances this season, including a remarkable four tries against the Melbourne Storm in Round 16.

Overall, Johnston has accumulated 206 tries.

Previously, there was uncertainty regarding his future when South Sydney hesitated to renew his contract, but it seems that the club is now committed to ensuring Johnston remains part of their roster.

"It's underway.

We're chatting to Souths and we're getting very close," Johnston remarked, highlighting the positive negotiations with the club.
