In a match that saw England stutter to victory over Tonga, Tom Johnstone took the spotlight by scoring two tries.

Despite their win, England's performance was far from polished, with only six survivors from last year's World Cup semi-final defeat to Samoa making the lineup.

The match took place in St Helens, and while England showed moments of quality in the key phases, Tonga proved to be a formidable opponent.

With 25 minutes left on the clock, the scores were level at two tries apiece before Johnstone's two decisive tries secured the win for the hosts.

Tonga's performance indicated that they will pose a challenge for England in the upcoming Tests, and Shaun Wane, England's coach, will undoubtedly demand improvement from his team.

Mikey Lewis, the Hull KR half-back making his international debut, played a crucial role in England's success in the first half, contributing to the opening try and scoring one himself.

However, Tonga responded strongly, taking the lead with tries from Starford To'a and Tyson Frizell.

Lewis once again showcased his skills by breaking through the Tongan line, resulting in a try and a conversion by Harry Smith, giving England a narrow 12-10 lead at halftime.

Tonga managed to level the scores right before the break with a penalty from Isaiya Katoa.
