Johnston Celebrates Historic Try Amid Chaos

‘No, what are you doing?’: AJ reveals Wayne’s classic... and then touching reaction to history

AJ Shares Wayne Bennett's Classic Reaction to Historic Moment

Alex Johnston has recounted the frantic scene during his record-setting NRL moment, highlighting both a humorous and heartfelt response from coach Wayne Bennett.

On Friday night, Johnston etched his name in history by scoring his 213th career try in the 41st minute, surpassing the legendary Ken Irvine. The Rabbitohs winger barely had time to absorb the achievement as fans rushed the field to celebrate.

Johnston recalled, "He said we will treat it as a win even though we lost."

Reflecting on the moment, Johnston added, "It was a pretty special moment for everyone to be involved, and to hear that from Wayne and to have him back in coaching, it's been an absolute honor to hear that from the master coach."

However, Bennett's classic reaction was evident when it came to the special jersey Johnston wore for the second half, adorned with a gold number two.

"They brought it out and Wayne for a second was like, 'No, what are you doing? We've got to focus'. (But then he was like) 'Alright, put it on, put it on'," Johnston recounted.
