Jillaroos coach wants Indigenous pre-game ceremony

Jess Skinner wants Australian rugby league to introduce a pre-match ceremony celebrating Indigenous culture.

She made the call before the Jillaroos' fifth straight World Cup final against the Kiwi Ferns.

Skinner said: "I'd love to be able to see it as a First Nations woman and as a proud Australian."

She admires Pacific pre-game traditions, including Samoa's siva tau and Fiji's hymn, and Australia will face New Zealand's haka in the final.

The Jillaroos carry Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags beside the Australian flag while singing the national anthem before matches.

They also sing a Torres Strait hymn privately on important occasions. "We do sing a hymn in momentous moments for us that we were gifted from the Torres Strait," Skinner said.

Australia beat Fiji 30-14 in Sunday's semi-final, which Skinner said provided useful preparation for the final.

"New Zealand will be physical just like the Fijian girls," Skinner said.
