After a challenging period of scrutiny, Nicho Hynes delivered a standout performance for the Cronulla Sharks, leading them to a 26-16 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday night.
He scored a crucial try in the 65th minute, contributing to the team's success as they ended the Cowboys' NRL season. Hynes recorded six tackle breaks, a line break, ran for 120 metres, and kicked for 115 metres.
His efforts came after NRL Immortal Andrew Johns publicly criticized Hynes' form, labeling it "really poor" and emphasizing the need for him to elevate his game during the finals.
On the 'Immortal Behaviour' podcast, Johns pointedly called for a greater contribution from Hynes, given his status as the Sharks' marquee player with a $1 million contract. "I know all the talk about money, but when you're the highest-paid player you own the result," he stated regarding Hynes' performance against the Parramatta Eels in Round 26.
After the game, Coach Craig Fitzgibbon praised Braydon Trindall, who played despite aggravating a shoulder injury, stating that Trindall's return allowed Hynes to be more involved in attacking plays.
Looking ahead, Hynes now faces the tough challenge of leading his team against the loser of the Panthers and Roosters match in the next round of finals.
