Jamie Humphreys, a halfback for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, has expressed surprise at rumors suggesting he signed with the Perth Bears for 2027.
Although he is set to be a free agent at the end of the 2026 season, speculation had mounted earlier this year that the addition of players like Payne Haas and David Fifita would complicate Souths' ability to keep him.
Despite being sidelined from the starting lineup under coach Wayne Bennett, Humphreys remains integral to the team's strategy and has contributed significantly from the bench.
The reports linking him to Perth emerged when the Bears were actively seeking to strengthen their roster, particularly in key positions.
Humphreys clarified his position in a conversation with News Corp's Newswire, stating he was never close to solidifying a deal.
"I don't know where that came from," he remarked about the Bears rumors.
He noted, "I didn't want to speak on it because that creates more talk."
Indicating his preference to remain with South Sydney, he added, "It definitely was something I was seriously interested in doing."
Humphreys continued, "The more I went throughout this season... It made the decision that it wasn't for me at that time."
He remains hopeful for a contract renewal with South Sydney, mentioning, "I'm happy with the decision I made, and hopefully we'll get something sorted soon (at Souths)."
