Valentine Holmes is finally set to fulfill his dream of representing the Cook Islands in the upcoming World Cup, a journey that has been longer than he anticipated.
Injuries have significantly hindered his ability to play for his heritage during crucial moments over the past two seasons.
A severe shoulder injury in 2025 prevented him from making his international debut during a World Cup qualifier against South Africa; however, he is poised for a shot at the World Cup later this year.
During this time, Holmes stepped into a coaching role for the team, showcasing his deep commitment to the Cook Islands Aitu.
"Yeah, it is pretty exciting," Holmes expressed when speaking with the media.
"It's definitely something that I've been thinking about (in) the last couple of years. But unfortunately, the two years I've been injured, at the end of 24, broke my leg, and then last year with my shoulder."
"So fingers crossed I get there at the end of the year."
His representation of the Aitu evokes memories of Jason Taumalolo and Andrew Fifita, who chose to represent Tonga before the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.
This decision had a significant impact, positioning Tonga and Samoa as serious competitors alongside Australia and New Zealand in the realm of rugby league.
