Secret discussions in Origin camp led to Payne Haas's commitment to play for Samoa, surprising Stephen Crichton, who initially thought they were just joking around. However, these conversations became significant as Haas made his choice on Sunday morning, greatly enhancing the Samoan team ahead of the upcoming Pacific Championships.
With Haas on board, Samoa could field an exceptionally strong forward pack, especially if Tino Fa'asuamaleaui joins him, along with Terrell May and other prominent players. This decision is a considerable advantage for the reigning World Cup finalists.
During this year's Blues camp, a strong presence of Samoan players-including Crichton, Brian To'o, Jarome Luai, and Spencer Leniu-provided Haas with an environment to consider representing Samoa. His shift from the Australian team is notable for the international rugby league community.
"We mucked around a lot about it, and I thought he was mucking around as well. But seeing the announcement was pretty cool," Crichton said, reflecting on the surprise decision. He also noted the significance of representation: "You see a lot of the Samoan and Tongan boys going back and representing (their heritage) and it's cool, and you can see what it means to their people."
Having been born in Samoa, Crichton comprehends the emotional depth associated with national pride, particularly as Haas felt a strong connection to the anthem during a recent Test match as a Kangaroo. This commitment might inspire others to switch allegiances, and Crichton is enthusiastic about the future of Samoan rugby, though he also sympathizes with his Australian teammates who might lose their spots as a result of this change.
