Clint Gutherson will miss the entire 2026 season after undergoing knee surgery, an issue that has plagued the St George Illawarra co-captain throughout the year.
The seasoned fullback had a cartilage procedure on Wednesday after battling the injury while trying to continue playing.
As a result, Gutherson's season concludes prematurely, with the Dragons now focused on ensuring their veteran player is fully ready for the 2027 season.
Fortunately for St George Illawarra, Gutherson is anticipated to recover in time for pre-season training in November, allowing him to prepare fully for next year.
Nonetheless, his absence is a considerable setback for a Dragons team that recently gained momentum, showcasing strong performances with back-to-back wins against the Sharks and Tigers.
Daniel Atkinson is expected to step in as fullback for the remainder of the season, giving the versatile player more time in the pivotal No.1 position.
Since joining from Parramatta, Gutherson has been a key part of the Dragons, contributing significant experience and leadership to a team undergoing many changes.
He will enter 2027 still with the Dragons and in the last year of his contract, facing the possibility that it may be his final season in the NRL, with decisions about his future remaining outstanding.
