Warrington icon Paul Wood chats with The Bench about overcoming 'dark times' battling OCD, likening the struggle to a tough match on the field where the opponent is your own mind.

The former player, known for his strong presence on the pitch and winning two Challenge Cups in 2010 and 2012 along with a League Leaders' Shield in 2011, discussed his personal journey with OCD, highlighting the intrusive thoughts that plagued him.

"People often misconstrue OCD as just keeping things neat and orderly, like organizing your CDs - a real blast from the past there.

But the reality is much deeper, it's about the relentless thoughts that consume you, leaving your mind racing non-stop.

It's like trying to defend against a relentless attack in a Rugby League game, you feel like you're constantly on the back foot," Wood explained.

The 42-year-old, now a respected club ambassador for Warrington Wolves, emphasized the importance of seeking help and the unwavering support he received from his former team.

In a game where teamwork and camaraderie are key, Wood acknowledged the vital role his teammates and the club played in helping him tackle his inner demons.

"When you're faced with OCD, it's like being in a high-pressure situation on the field where every move matters.

Your mind becomes a whirlwind of thoughts, and you're forced to perform these rituals to try and regain control," Wood shared.

With his characteristic resilience and determination, Wood's story serves as a reminder that even in life's toughest scrums, there's always a way to push through and come out on top.

As he continues to share his experiences, he showcases the courage and strength that define a true sporting legend.
