In a classic case of life coming full circle, former NRL playmaker Russell Aitken has landed himself a top coaching gig in the QLD Cup for the upcoming 2025 season.
Having recently served as the Cronulla Sharks' Elite Pathways Development coach, Aitken is no stranger to the coaching game, having previously helmed the St George Illawarra Dragons in the NSW Cup and served as their NRL Development coach.
A standout moment in Aitken's coaching career was leading the Sharks team to the Jersey Flegg Cup Grand Final, although they were ultimately defeated by the Canterbury Bulldogs.
Before transitioning to coaching, Aitken made his mark on the field, playing 17 matches over six seasons for the Cronulla Sharks, North Queensland Cowboys, and Melbourne Storm.
He is particularly remembered for stepping up as Cameron Smith's replacement in the 2008 NRL Grand Final against the Manly Sea Eagles, despite limited first-grade experience.
With his wealth of experience both on and off the field, Aitken is poised to bring a fresh perspective and winning mindset to the Northern Pride as their new head coach.
