Fiji's Saukuru faces Australia test

Solomone Saukuru

Fiji's next World Cup match brings centre Solomone Saukuru a likely contest with Australia's Kotoni Staggs at Suncorp Stadium next Sunday.

Staggs, a NSW Origin player, has represented Tonga and Australia internationally.

"He's a great player but no-one here in Fiji is intimidated. As long as we have a good week at training, let's see what we can do," Saukuru said.

The 21-year-old scored twice in his second Test as Fiji defeated the Cook Islands 40-12 in Newcastle on Sunday.

His international call-up followed four NRL appearances for Wests Tigers late in 2026, in which he scored four tries after nearly a full season with Western Suburbs in the NSW Cup.

Fiji coach Mick Potter said he had tracked Saukuru's progress for 18 months, including his time in the reserves.

"It's been well deserved - he's on the up. He's a player of the future for the Tigers and for Fiji," Potter said.

Saukuru said senior teammates were sharing experience and advice, adding: "I'm kind of like a sponge wanting to soak it all in, what they're teaching me."

He hopes to take those lessons back to Wests Tigers for the 2027 season.
