The Cook Islands face New Zealand in Christchurch next Sunday, while Fiji meet defending champions Australia at Suncorp Stadium the day before.
Fiji opened their World Cup Pool A campaign with a 40-12 victory over the Cook Islands at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.
Jacob Saifiti scored in the 28th minute, gathering Brandon Wakeham's kick and taking the ball from fullback Esom Ioka to score beneath the posts.
The 30-year-old Newcastle prop was playing his eighth Test for Fiji and returning after a four-match ban for a dangerous tackle against the Warriors in NRL round 26.
The suspension also ruled him out of Newcastle's finals campaign, and the match marked his first appearance for Fiji since the 2017 World Cup.
"He's a great acquisition to the team, so to have him back after being away for a long time is fantastic for Fiji rugby league," coach Mick Potter said.
Fiji scored five first-half tries to lead 28-0, then finished with a double from centre Solomon Saukuru.
Captain Api Koroisau marshalled the side, while halves Kurt Donoghoe and Wakeham combined for five line-break assists and five try assists.
"It seems to be a trait by us. For the last four years I've been involved with this team it takes a while for us to start clicking," said coach Karmichael Hunt.
"I'm glad we ended up finding some footy, but we were the own worst enemy in the first half."
Hunt replaced halfback Esan Marsters with veteran Brad Takairangi in the 55th minute, saying Marsters had arrived at camp with an Achilles tendon problem.
"So it was really more about getting some fresh legs on there, but maintaining some experience with Taks," Hunt explained.
Four minutes after the change, Maui Winitana-Patelesio scored for the Cook Islands, followed by Davvy Moale's try to make it 34-12.
