The competition for the head coach position of England is intensifying as the Rugby League World Cup approaches in October.

Leading the pack are three candidates: Leeds Rhinos coach Brad Arthur, South Sydney Rabbitohs icon Sam Burgess, and Gold Coast Titans assistant Brian McDermott, as reported by NRL.com.

With Willie Peters' recent confirmation as the head coach of the new NRL franchise, the PNG Chiefs, he is no longer a contender for the England position.

Peters was considered a top choice after transforming Hull KR from last place to Super League champions over four seasons, notably overcoming the Brisbane Broncos to secure a world title.

The Rugby Football League plans to announce the new England coach in April, having compiled a list of candidates deemed suitable for the role.

Former England head coach Shaun Wane stepped down in January after a disappointing Ashes series, where the team struggled against the Kangaroos.

Arthur aims to advance his career from Leeds Rhinos, with many believing he is a candidate for the recently vacated Manly Sea Eagles position following Anthony Seibold's dismissal.

Meanwhile, McDermott boasts a distinguished record in the Super League, including four titles with the Rhinos and victories in both the Challenge Cup and World Club Challenge.

Burgess is also rumored to be in line for an NRL coaching role eventually while currently contributing to the Warrington Wolves.
