Eels Shift Strategy: Contract Extension for Surprising Playmaker?

NRL Round 2, 2025: Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers

The Parramatta Eels are now prepared to let Joash Papalii depart, reversing their initial strategy with Volkman to instead renew the former Warriors and Roosters half's contract.

Initially, before signing Jarome Luai on a 12-month agreement after he was allowed to exit the Wests Tigers, the Eels had opted not to hold onto the 24-year-old.

A report from CODE Sports indicates that his performance this season, especially in recent weeks, has prompted the club to consider extending his deal beyond this year.

Volkman left New Zealand following the 2023 season without a contract after struggling for consistent playing time in the NRL with the Sydney Roosters and the New Zealand Warriors, compounded by injury issues.

He traveled to Australia with hopes of securing a spot with another team.

Initially reported to have joined the Red V, it was later revealed that the contract wasn't registered with the NRL, and a medical assessment had yet to be completed.

During training, the Dragons' staff discovered a shoulder injury that would sideline him for the 2024 season.

Nevertheless, the Eels were among several clubs actively seeking the young playmaker in 2024, eventually signing him to a two-year contract despite his injury concerns.

This season, Volkman has demonstrated his ability to compete in the NRL and has been resilient, appearing in 16 matches and partnering with Eels standout Mitch Moses in the halves.
