Scott Drinkwater Reflects on His Career Choices
Scott Drinkwater, a star for the St George Illawarra Dragons and a standout at the North Queensland Cowboys, has disclosed that he was offered a contract by the Brisbane Broncos prior to his relocation to Townsville.
Drinkwater, who advanced through the Melbourne Storm ranks, found himself hindered by several prominent players ahead of him. This prompted his decision to join the Cowboys in early 2022, signing a five-year contract.
The transfer has proven beneficial for North Queensland; although they haven't secured a premiership, Drinkwater has established himself as one of the league's most formidable fullbacks.
In contrast, the Broncos opted to recruit Reece Walsh, who remains with the team to this day.
Walsh, who emerged from Brisbane's youth programs and made his debut with the New Zealand Warriors, always appeared destined to return to Queensland eventually.
As he frequently enters discussions regarding State of Origin and represented the Kangaroos in last year's Ashes series, this weekend he and Drinkwater will showcase their offensive skills against each other. However, Drinkwater acknowledged to News Corp that the Broncos' decision to reclaim Walsh was the right move.
"Looking back, it's the best decision they ever made - not signing me and getting Reece Walsh back, wasn't it?" Drinkwater remarked.
"There was a little bit of interest there from the Broncos... my preference was to stay at the time and we got that deal done.
"There were a few talks with the Broncos, but I bet they are happy they didn't (sign Drinkwater)."
