The St George Illawarra Dragons have officially named Dean Young as their head coach for the upcoming two seasons.
Young stepped up as interim coach after the exit of Shane Flanagan prior to the Anzac Day match earlier this year.
As the Dragons prepare for the next season with recruitment largely finalized, they have been methodical in selecting a permanent coach without feeling rushed.
It has been reported that Young, alongside South Sydney Rabbitohs assistant Ben Hornby and another undisclosed candidate, went through the interview process. Ultimately, Young, who has received support from both current players and new recruits, will take the reins.
"We said from the outset that we would take the time needed to make the right decision for the Club's future. This has been a structured process, and Dean has emerged as the candidate we believe is best placed to lead the next phase of the football program," stated Dragons CEO Tim Watsford.
"Dean's history with the Dragons is well known and respected, but that is not why he has been appointed. This decision is based on the strength of his football plan, his connection with players, his leadership of staff, his alignment with the pathways and recruitment strategy, and his understanding of what this Club needs to become.
"We understand the members and supporters want results. So do we. Dean recognises the responsibility that comes with this role, and he will be supported by a football structure designed to drive standards, development and performance throughout the program."
Since Young's appointment, the Dragons have demonstrated some on-field improvements, achieving two victories after failing to secure a win under Flanagan in the early part of the season.
"Leading this great club is a privilege, but I understand that it also comes with responsibility and pressure," Young expressed.
