Dragons Fly High: McNamara Takes a Timeout

McNamara leaves Catalans Dragons | Tomkins vows to bounce back

LeagueNews.co | Cooper McEnroe

Steve McNamara has departed from his role as head coach of the Catalans Dragons, effective immediately, with assistant coach Joel Tomkins stepping in as caretaker.

This change comes as the club has only achieved five wins in 11 Betfred Super League matches this season, most recently suffering a 40-0 defeat to St Helens.

Tomkins, brother of player Sam, will lead the team in their upcoming match against Wigan in Perpignan.

McNamara, the longest-serving head coach in Super League, has been at the helm since 2017 and notably rescued the club from relegation during the Million Pound Game.

His tenure included significant achievements, such as winning the Challenge Cup in 2018 and reaching the Super League Grand Finals in both 2021 and 2023.

Nevertheless, the Dragons have faced considerable challenges this season, including a heavy defeat to Saints, following a demoralizing Challenge Cup loss to Hull KR in York.
