The St George Illawarra Dragons have initiated preliminary contract discussions with a key player on their roster.
The Daily Telegraph reveals that the club aims to extend the contract of veteran hooker Damien Cook, planning to keep the former NSW Blues star with the team past the end of the 2026 season.
At 36 years old, Cook is set to be off-contract at the conclusion of the current season. Initial talks are focusing on a potential one-year extension that would see him remain with the Dragons until 2027.
Returning to the Dragons in 2025 after nine seasons with South Sydney, Cook was a standout performer throughout a challenging season, playing in all 24 matches for a team that finished third-last under Shane Flanagan's second year as head coach.
While there are rumors that Cook might contemplate retirement following an impressive 240-game NRL career, he is reportedly eager to continue his playing career. The Dragons regard his experience as crucial during their significant rebuilding phase.
The situation presents uncertainty for star hooker Jacob Liddle, who is vying for a starting position in the NRL. Nevertheless, Cook's leadership is clearly valued within the Dragons organization.
