South Sydney has suspended contract talks with Latrell Mitchell until next year, leaving open the possibility he departs after the 2027 season.
Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga has shown interest, but an official offer for 2028 cannot be made before November 1.
Brad Fittler told the Sunday Footy Show that Mitchell had played "less than half a season the last three years," and warned his body must hold up.
Billy Slater also highlighted Mitchell's fitness as a risk, while Andrew Johns backed Perth as a destination.
"They need one of those figureheads," Johns said of the new franchise.
Nathan Cleary suffered a compound leg fracture in Phoenix Crossland's hip-drop tackle at Accor Stadium on Sunday night, ending his World Cup hopes.
Physio Brien Seeney said the open fracture raises infection risks and makes recovery less predictable.
"The odds are overwhelmingly in his favour that he will be still there by Round 1, 2027, but open fractures increase the uncertainty," Seeney said.
