The Queensland Maroons have officially announced Darius Boyd as their new head coach for the 2027 season.
Boyd steps in after Slater resigned following the conclusion of the 2026 series, taking the helm for the upcoming two seasons.
Having played 28 times for the Maroons, Boyd has coached the Queensland under-19 team for the past two years, outpacing several other candidates, including Slater's 2026 assistant coaches, Ben Te'o and Matt Ballin.
"It's a privileged position and I'm very grateful for the opportunity," Boyd stated.
"I understand the responsibility that comes with the role as well. My job is to build on the legacy created by the many great Queensland players and coaches who have come before us."
It remains uncertain whether Te'o and Ballin will retain their current positions.
Boyd, who played 337 NRL matches with the Brisbane Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons, and Newcastle Knights, brings extensive experience to the role.
"Darius has lived and breathed what it means to represent Queensland," said QRL chairman Brian Canavan in a statement.
"His playing achievements speak for themselves, but what has impressed us just as much is the work he has done since retirement to develop as a coach and leader."
"He has built strong relationships throughout the pathways system, earned the respect of players and staff, and demonstrated a genuine commitment to helping young people reach their potential.
"Darius understands the responsibility that comes with the Maroons jersey. He knows the culture, the history, and the standards required to succeed at the highest level."
