Queensland legend Darius Boyd has been appointed as the new Maroons coach following Billy Slater's resignation after the recent series defeat. Many fans were caught off guard by Slater's decision to step down, believing he would continue in his role.
Iconic Queensland figures Johnathan Thurston, Cameron Smith, and Kevin Walters have all declined the coaching position. Boyd expressed his interest in the role and was open to discussions.
This appointment comes after he guided the U-19s Queensland team to a State of Origin victory this season, impressing the Queensland administration. "It's a privileged position and I'm very grateful for the opportunity," Boyd stated in his announcement. "I understand the responsibility that comes with the role as well. My job is to build on the legacy created by the many great Queensland players and coaches who have come before us."
Boyd surpassed potential contenders Matt Ballin and Ben Te'o for the coaching position. A former winger, he ranks as Queensland's second-all-time leading try scorer, just behind Greg Inglis. He has also contributed as a backline assistant for the Brisbane Broncos under Walters.
Eager to advance his coaching career, Boyd is poised to face debutant coach Matt King of the NSW Blues. "Really enjoyed my time at the U-19s…only just seeing some of those guys coming through and making their debuts in the NRL. It's a huge job, pressure cooker, if the QRL wanted to have a chat with me I would love to do so."
Queensland suffered a recent series loss, with Blues coach Laurie Daley securing a win in the decider at Suncorp Stadium. Following the series, Daley resigned, and soon after, Slater announced his departure. The NSW Blues have appointed King as their new coach.
