However, the 47-year-old will work in the bunker for Friday's Dolphins-Roosters preliminary final, while Adam Gee referees at Suncorp Stadium.
Retired Cronulla great Paul Gallen says technology is marginalising officials and may eventually put robots or AI in charge.
Asked about that prospect, Gallen said: "It might not be too far away, who knows?"
He wants referees controlling matches, with video review restricted to tries, and says human officials will make mistakes.
Gallen also questioned why Daly Cherry-Evans avoided the sin bin for tripping Teig Wilton during Cronulla's elimination loss to the Roosters last Saturday.
He said the incident did not decide the result, but denying the Sharks a player advantage removed a comeback chance.
Braydon Trindall dropped the ball over the line; Gallen said 24-16 against 12 men was possible, adding: "But it didn't happen."
