Craig Fitzgibbon's future at Cronulla is secure, but the Sharks' latest finals exit has intensified questions about his coaching.
Cronulla re-signed Fitzgibbon earlier this year despite having no immediate need to make that decision. He remains contracted long-term, although rugby league contracts are not always permanent safeguards.
The Sharks' 2026 season ended at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night after the Sydney Roosters won their semi-final convincingly.
Cronulla lost Nicho Hynes to concussion while conceding an early try, then soon lost Mawene Hiroti as well. They therefore played much of the contest with only 15 men.
The depleted Sharks showed courage, but faded badly late as the Roosters scored several tries. The Roosters were imperfect yet comfortably secured a meeting with the Dolphins next weekend for a grand-final place.
Fitzgibbon is no longer an inexperienced coach, making the result more concerning for Cronulla. His bench rotation and tactical decisions remain questionable, while his reluctance to select promising youngsters has also drawn criticism.
Cronulla has a strong junior group coming through, with few receiving meaningful opportunities despite Newtown's excellent form. Fitzgibbon was expected to take this squad to a grand final, and possibly win the premiership.
